Why should I do yoga?

Yoga and meditation are a wonderful compliment to mental health therapy. They promote relaxation… the opposite of anxiety and stress. In yoga, we focus on the breath and movements of the body, teaching our mind to be present rather than worrying about the past or the future. Yoga can help lower our fight, flight, or freeze response by activating our parasympathetic nervous system and lowering negative emotions like depression and anger.

Do I have to be flexible or have experience to do yoga?

No!  One of the most popular yoga myths is the belief that you need to be flexible before ever setting foot on a mat.  Yoga is a practice for every body, no matter your size, age, gender or level of flexibility.  Yoga poses (asanas) can be adapted with the use of props such as bolsters, blocks, or straps.  The key is to start where you are, and you will gradually increase your flexibility as you go.  Increased flexibility is only one component of a regular yoga practice. More importantly, yoga is about mindful movement, an attitude of presence, self-regulation, self-acceptance, breathwork, and meditation. In no way does it require you to be flexible or have a “yoga body” before you can start practicing.  Treat your body with love and patience, and watch your confidence increase as you practice.
